190765 Laser Optics Media Research Engineering Summer Intern (Open)

Location: Fremont Research Center

Areas of Interest: Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Laser and Photonics Technology, AFM

Are you an engineering grad student seeking an exciting opportunity for summer 2019? This is a great internship opportunity for someone to learn and help develop next generation Laser Optics technology.

The internship will be located at our recently opened, world class Fremont Research Center and will report to the Managing Technologist for the Media Development Organization. The successful candidate will work as part of a team, working on projects that include:

  • Developing and demonstrating media and substrate technology for next generation magnetic recording media.

  • Will investigate 3D/5D optical storage physics and capability.

  • Will work with principal engineers to apply femtosecond Laser technology and develop novel beam shaping technology based on nonlinear optics.

  • Will involve optical, electron microscopic and AFM characterization of the devices.

  • Other responsibilities include comparing measurements results with modeling results to understand the underlying Physics.

Interns typically work Monday thru Friday 8am to 5pm. The hours are subject to change with or without notice at the sole discretion of Seagate.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field with research on pico and femtosecond LASER technology or nonlinear optics.

  • Available summer 2019 starting in May or June and returning to school in the fall.

  • Proficient programming skills with Visual Basic, .NET, C-Sharp, or Labview or MatLab, Python or C++ would be strong plus.

  • Other helpful skills include: system integration, data-acquisition and instrumentation control programing skills.

  • Mechanical designing with Solidworks, electronics design and modification.

  • Proficient communication with team members.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a creative environment.
